Cookies & device storage / 2026

Remembering your choices

The atlas keeps its reading features simple. Here is the difference between browser storage, a locally prepared note and a file you choose to keep.

What cookies and localStorage do

Cookies are small values stored by a browser and, depending on their settings, sent with later requests. localStorage is browser storage available to scripts on the same website. Both can retain information between visits, but they are different technologies.

The atlas’s page functionality does not use advertising cookies, analytics trackers or localStorage. Its navigation, FAQ accordions and scroll reveals do not need persistent identifiers. The site’s supplied script does not read or write cookie values.

Your correspondence is not a saved draft

The correspondence panel holds your entries in the current page while you use it. Generating text does not put the note into cookies or localStorage. Copying uses your device clipboard only when you choose that action and your browser permits it. Downloading creates a plain-text file only when you choose to download.

Clipboard contents and downloaded files are controlled by your device and other applications. Clearing website cookies will not necessarily remove either of them. Delete the file or replace your clipboard contents separately if that is what you intend.

Browser caching and technical delivery

Your browser may cache HTML, stylesheets, scripts and images to make later page loads faster. A cache is not the same as an advertising identifier. Hosting services may also handle technical requests to operate and secure the website. See the Privacy notice for the distinction between technical delivery and editorial correspondence.

Managing stored information

Most browsers let you inspect or remove site data in their privacy settings. You can usually block cookies, clear cached files and remove localStorage by site. Exact controls vary by browser and device. Removing site data may reset preferences added by a service you have used, but it does not withdraw an email already sent.

If a separate consent control is presented by the website’s delivery service, use that control to review the choices it offers. Optional storage should not be enabled before any consent required by law. Rejecting optional storage should not prevent you from reading these articles.

External links and questions

Following a link to a garden, conservation body or email provider takes you to a separate service. Its cookies and storage practices are governed by its own notice. This atlas does not control those services.
